Privacy notice for the browser extension
Privacy notice: the Cashbackie browser extension
Last updated: October 29, 2026
This notice describes what information the Cashbackie browser extension (for Chrome, Edge and Firefox) processes. We have deliberately built the extension to be as light and as sparing with information as possible.
1. What the extension does
- It regularly downloads a public list of shops from Cashbackie (the shops with cashback).
- It compares the domain name of your active tab with this list to see whether there is cashback.
- If there is a match, it shows a notice. If you click "Activate cashback", it opens Cashbackie's tracking link to that shop.
- It uses the list of shops for the country you choose (the Netherlands, Belgium, France or Germany).
- It looks in your browser at how a tab arrives at a shop: through our own link, through a link from another site (an affiliate partner) or directly. If you came through another partner, it shows no cashback and no button for that shop until you close the browser; this way it doesn't take the purchase over from that partner. If you came through our link, it shows you that your cashback is active.
2. What information is processed
- The domain name of the active tab is compared with the list of shops locally in your browser. It is neither stored nor sent, not to us and not to anyone else.
- The list of shops and your settings (for example whether notices are on or off) are stored locally in your browser.
- To recognize how a tab arrives at a shop, the extension looks at the address of each page a tab opens, only in your browser. It only keeps, per tab, whether you came through us or through another partner, and per shop, whether the cashback is active or whether it steps aside, each with a time. This is kept in the browser's temporary storage, goes neither to us nor to anyone else and disappears when you close the browser.
- The country you choose, or that the extension works out from your browser's language or from our site where you log in or click through, is stored locally. It uses it to choose the list of shops and the language.
3. What the extension does NOT do
- It doesn't store or send any browsing history.
- It doesn't read any page content, forms, passwords or payment details.
- In the extension, it does not ask for your name, email address or login details.
- It doesn't add any advertising or trackers.
- It doesn't sell or share any information.
4. Link with your account
A purchase is not linked to your account in the extension, but on our site: when you click "Activate cashback", you are sent on through our own site, and the link is made there based on your session. The extension doesn't know your user ID.
5. Permissions (and why)
- Access to websites: to be able to show the cashback notice on a partner shop and to see how a tab arrives at a shop. The extension only shows something on shops from the list and doesn't read page content.
- Tabs: to be able to compare the domain name of the active tab.
- Storage: to store the list of shops and your settings locally.
- Web requests: to see the address through which a tab arrives at a shop, as described above. The extension only looks at this address, not at what is sent, and doesn't change anything in the request.
- Scripts: to show the notice in the shop.
- Alarms: to update the list of shops every hour.
6. Removal
If you remove the extension, your browser also deletes all the information stored locally (list of shops, settings). The extension then opens a page on our site where you can tell us why; this page receives no information from the extension.
